I had the great pleasure again with the company of Dave and Ros Downes yesterday, it is always nice to spend the day on the water with such nice people. When we arrived, the river on the lower Eden was at 1’6″, 14 oC and with some colour, with no rain the last two days it was on the drop and clearing. After some initial Spey casting preparation in a stiff south-easterly downstream wind they were both ready to go.
We elected to fish a one inch copper tube on a full floater with Ros and a sink-tip with a size eight double with Dave. Around noon there was the odd fish beginning to show (in between the tides), thankfully the inevitable happened…
Ros was into a good fish!
After several runs and a few heart in the mouth moments the fish tired and was duly landed.
This was Ros’s first salmon on the fly, a proud moment, a quick photo and the fish was returned safely to the water, well done Ros! Later on in the afternoon, the wind dropped and Ros was into another good’un, unfortunately after around two minutes it parted company. For me it was the perfect day, great casting, great company, great weather and a fish (sorry Dave not for you this time, Ros lost yours!). After a quiet spell the last two weeks on the river with the salmon, it looks like there are a few Autumn fish started coming in now.
