Had a nice day on the lower river with Dave Bamford who does some really important work with salmon from the River Ure Trust and Kevin who I fish with on Fridays, the river had dropped to one foot six from two foot the previous day and was clearing nicely. Although we did not see any salmon movement off the tide that day, there were three fish hooked and lost!
It was good to see the new broods of mallard on the river this week, some young otter, plenty of sand and house martins, swifts and swallows and there is more kingfishers around this year, I have not seen any sea lamprey yet. These high waters should get the smolts out into the estuary and bring more salmon in.
Heavy rain all evening and through the Friday night had risen levels to nearly five foot the next day making the river unfishable and having to cancel everything for he next few days once again! I just hate to disappoint people who have taken time off work to have a day on the Eden with me because of the weather, my apologies for that but it seems to be the regular pattern over the last few years.
What do you do when you cannot fish? You do some river bank maintenance.
You can certainly get a good shot of endorphins strimming over a mile of river bank!
