Fly
Fishing in Cumbria
Cumbria
is one hell of a beautiful county with fanatstic scenery and
fishing. My aim is for you to enjoy what we have here, and
to give you an experience in a real fly fishing situation
on a serious major game river, and also to help you understand
how and why. We do not always catch fish every time out; (that's
fishing), but we do have a good day and fun trying and I will
look after your needs, I will keep you supplied with tea/coffee
plenty of photos, and you go away at the end with something
special.
Casting tuition for double and single-handed rods, single
and double Spey, snake roll, snap-T/circle, overhead, sunk
line, double haul and saltwater techniques and many others.
Reading the river, safety, fishing tactics, knots, playing,
landing, handling fish, entomology and enjoying the surroundings.
Tuition and fishing experiences can be on an hourly, (min
2 hours) or half/full day/s session on the various private
beats I use on the lower/middle river Eden or stillwater.
You will get the full benefit on the day from a one to one/two
basis and everything is included in the cost given below (excluding
E.A rod license). For larger groups of three or more I will
have to arrange a different beat for the day that will accommodate
the extra numbers, and the cost will be extra for this depending
on the time of year. I can supply quality tackle for you to
use. There are also demonstrations and guiding services available.
Don't
forget your rod license, these can be purchased from your
local post office or on line,
E.A
rod license either for the day, week or
season.

Why have tuition?-
How many times have you had to get the spinning rod out on
a beautiful salmon river when the water is in perfect ply
for fly fishing, just because the wind got up? Walked around
the other side of the lake because the wind was in your face?
Mysterious knots keep appearing in your leader and you get
snapped when playing fish?
The fly hits you on the back or gets caught in the grass or
bushes behind, the line never seems to go out straight, you
cannot achieve much distance and it makes cracking sounds
on the backcast? You've just spent a small fortune on a beat
in Scotland, Norway or Russia, bought the best tackle you
can afford and are unable to use it effectively?
These are just a few of the reasons, there are many more.
My philosophy is, if you can enjoy effortless casting, you
can begin to enjoy the other aspects of fishing, be more relaxed
and end the day satisfied and content.
Give
yourself plenty of time to get the casting right before the
season or your holiday starts, the close season is the perfect
opportunity on the river.

January
to November.
Some
of these sessions could be; fly fishing for salmon
in the spring, summer or autumn. Given the right
water condition's, the salmon fishing on the river Eden
can be nothing less than exceptional all season,
Eden

Annan

There are four distinct salmon run's,
the spring from Jan until the end of May, the summer, early
June (large double figure fish), grilse in July and the Autumn,
end of August onwards (the back-end run). You will learn about
safety, wading, Spey-casting, reading the river, choosing
the correct fly, bait fishing and playing and landing fish.
April
to October.
SeaTrout
fishing at night, (very exciting), or by day if the water
is up. You arrive at the water May, June, July at 8pm, I will
then make sure that your casting ability is up to scratch
because we will be fishing in the dark later (the most productive
time unless the river is coloured). We will look at the pool
we are going to fish and plan our evening's fishing, flies,
wading line's, where to get in and out etc. We are able to
fish some of the faster water before dark without disturbing
the area we are fishing later, sometimes both sea-trout and
salmon are caught doing this. The session can go on for as
long as you require, or as long as the fish are in a taking
mood.

Brown
trout fishing
on the river Eden. There is very good trout fishing
on the beat's that I use. Learn about entomology, tactics,
flycasting, fishing the dry fly, nymph, North Country
Spiders, reading the river and some of the finer point's
of the sport. There are numerous fish in the one to
two pound class and they are all wild, with three to
four pound fish among them. Enjoy the split cane experience
in 2007. (Season March15-Sept30).

June

has a superb head of decent size grayling, the fishing
is at it's best from early November to mid January.

I can arrange fishing on private beats and accommodation
for groups or individuals to suit your budget. Czech
nymphing, spiders, nymphs, dry or have a try at long
trotting with a centrepin. The scenery is fantastic
anytime of the year. (Season- June16 to March14).

Grayling
one day courses-2006/7.
Fly fishing for these beautiful fish
on the river Eden is something special. Why pack up your fly
rods at the end of September because the trout season is finished
for five month's, and miss out on some fantastic sport and
surrounding's. When the grayling season is finished in March
it's time for the trout again (your rod license covers you
from April to April). The grayling is going from strength
to strength on the Eden, with fish up to four pound's last
year. The average Eden grayling is around a pound and a half
with plenty over two pound being caught regularly on nymph's,
spider's, bug's and the dry fly.

Spring
Salmon one day courses - 2007.
I
do not see many angler's out fishing at this time of the year
and this is probably due to three reason's, they do not enjoy
being out when it is cold, they can not kill a fish until
June 16th or they think that the Eden does not have a spring
run. The first two reason's are up to the individual, but
the third could not be further from the truth, the Eden over
the last few years has probably experienced one of the best
spring run's for a considerable time. There are fish running
right from the start of the season Jan 15th, and they are
in no hurry to leave the lower river and run any distance
upstream until the water warms in April/May.
On
the day you will learn about safety, the fish, tackle, Spey-casting,
spinning (optional), reading the river, fly-tying (optional),
wading, fish handling and much more. I want you to be able
after the day's course to go and fish confidently on your
own and have an understanding of how everything work's.

Coarse
fishing.
There
are many coarse fishing courses and experiences to have a
go at on both river and lake. From big chub, carp, pike, bream
or pike there is something for everyone and every age, there
is PAA coach Chris Bowman there also to give an expert approach
and guidance.
Learn
how to trot a float in search search of grayling, rove the
river for
chub, fish for carp or boat fish the lakes and lochs for big
pike.
Professional Anglers Association coach Chris Bowman can offer
you a day's
instruction or a guided days fishing to remember. How about
trying for bream
up to 15lb. in weight on Chris's own 20 acre lake which has
also produced
pike to 25 lb., chub to 6 lb. and carp to 24 lb. 12 oz. Or
why not try for a
20 lb. carp on a secluded woodland pool. Chris can take care
of your every
need, airport pick ups, accommodation, transport, tackle,
bait and
instruction all you need to do is relax and enjoy.
Contact Chris on 01228674519, 07714168939 or view
www.bowmanfishman.fsnet.co.uk for more details.
See
junior courses page for 10-16 year olds.
No
matter what sport we participate in, there always is a safety
aspect to consider, in fishing it is no different. There are
many dangers, wading, casting, the weather to name but a few.
All of the sessions and courses I run cover these aspects
fully.
Courses
may be canceled at short notice because of severe water condition's
(as above compared with the same on the home page), but will
be rescheduled at a later mutual date, or an alternative on
the day if agreeable.
